I would like to thank one of our reader lvs for introducing me to a very different form of saving energy.

Blackle is a search engine that saves energy by using a black screen. Blackle is an initiative of Heap Media.

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.”

I would really recommend blackle as it help us taking these small steps which really adds up to save energy and our dear planet.

Install energy savers which help you in saving energy when your older bulbs burn out.

Clothes should be washed in cold water whenever possible. Almost 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.

Use a clothesline or a drying rack for saving energy otherwise used during machine drying. If you must use a dryer, adding dryer balls helps to cut drying time.

Setting thermostat lower in the winter and a higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.

Appliances must be plugged off when you’re not using them. You can also use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts the energy use thus saving energy.
