Blackle – Using black screen while searching to save energy
I would like to thank one of our reader lvs for introducing me to a very different form of saving energy.
Blackle is a search engine that saves energy by using a black screen. Blackle is an initiative of Heap Media.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.”
I would really recommend blackle as it help us taking these small steps which really adds up to save energy and our dear planet.

This is a great innovation from Google. I am using this in both office and home. I’m glad to be able to take a small step in saving energy…Nice article!
Great website! Just popping in from Entrecard! I added you to MyBlogLog too! Take care!
Black screens are only a valid energy saving strategy for some displays, especially CRT monitors. Modern flat screens are efficient and the difference that Blackle could make is negligable. Best way to save energy is to ALWAYS power down completely. the converters for all your DC powered gear use power even when the device is turned off.
Interesting and definitely Green )))
Negligible impact, this, but maybe it will help make people consider their energy usage.
you can easily set the background using JS with opera browser or FireFox grease-monkey
Thanks for this great tips, will ask my husband to get blackle at once !!
Yep, Martin is right. Basically, this does absolutely nothing with most displays. Take the bus to work once a month or something, it will probably help more.
Wow! That’s really interesting. I saw Google Black and thought is was a joke because they offered no explanation. Thank you, that makes so much sense.
I should darken other things on my computer so that it saves energy. Like maybe a black theme from Firefox. You should make your site darker in honor of this.
Anyway, I’m dropping in from Entrecard just to say hi!
Just last night I had this discussion with my IT guy. I have my desktop set to black, and he could not understand why. He keeps setting it to blue because that is the standard. I just return it to black. My own little battle.
